Fish Pie

A little bit about this recipe……

Prep: 45 mins | Cook: 40 mins | Serves: 4 | Cost: £ 1.50pp

I think fish pie is one of those meals that is real comfort food. For this recipe I use any frozen white fish

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces of any frozen white fish
  • Large handful of frozen cooked prawns
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp capers (optional)
  • 3 hard boiled eggs
  • Milk
  • Plain flour
  • 50g butter
  • Large pinch mustard powder
  • Grated cheddar
  • 2 large handfuls of mixed frozen veg
  • Mashed potato (enough to cover the dish you are cooking your pie in)
  • Grated cheese and bread crumbs (optional)

Method

  1. Put your fish, onion and garlic into a pan, cover with milk and season. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and cover. cook the fish until it can be broken apart with a fork. Remove fish and onion from pan with a slotted spoon. DO NOT THROW MILK AWAY!
  2. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat. Once melted gradually add flour, mixing all he time, until you have a thick paste (Roux).
  3. Gradually add milk and onions that you cooked your fish in. Stir continuously. I usually add enough milk until sauce does not taste floury. Continue to stir until sauce starts to thicken. Now you can start to stir in the grated cheese. (I have not given you the amount of cheese you need – this is personal taste) Once you are happy with the taste remove from heat.
  4. Flake your fish with forks and pop into baking dish.
  5. Add your chopped boiled eggs, vegetables and caper if using.
  6. Mix your sauce with fish mixture.
  7. Top with mash potato and run a fork over the top. (This gives nice crispy bits)
  8. Now you can sprinkle over grated cheese and bread crumbs. (This is not essential, but adds a tasty finish to your pie)
  9. Place dish on a baking tray and pop in oven until bubbling and crispy on top.
  10. Remove from oven. Like many of my meals I like to serve with green veg.
  11. Have another one

Blags, Tips & Tricks

You really don’t need to use expensive fish for this. I tend to use basa or just any white fish.

If you have any of the fish mixture left, it freezes very well.

Sometimes I make this into fish croquettes or fishcakes.
