As it’s the very first Jam Jam Cookathon this Sunday, I thought I’d put up the recipe I’ll be making on the day – Jam Jam’s Chilli.
Now, before anyone starts writing strongly-worded emails, I should probably confess something…
I don’t actually put any chilli in my chilli! 😄
The reason is simple. Our family has a huge range of tastes when it comes to heat. Some like things mild, some like things spicy and some seem to think a meal isn’t complete unless it can strip paint from a garden fence 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ (bet you can’t guess who that might be)?
To keep everyone happy, I leave the chilli out altogether and let people add their own heat at the table. Paps has built up quite a collection of hot sauces over the years, ranging from “pleasantly warming” to “absolute insanity”, so everyone can choose their own adventure.
This recipe is also one of my favourite batch-cooking meals because it’s incredibly forgiving. I’ve included all sorts of optional extras that can be thrown in depending on what you have lurking in the fridge, freezer or cupboards. Random tins of beans, odd bits of chorizo, leftover bacon, mystery ingredients bought by Paps… they’re all welcome.
In true Jam Jam style, the recipe is more of a guide than a set of strict instructions. Use what you have, leave out what you don’t and make it your own.
I’ll post the results of the Cookathon next week and would absolutely love it if some of you joined in. Whether you’re making chilli, soup, cottage pie or simply trying to tame an overflowing freezer, let’s see how much batch cooking we can get done together!
